Wilbur Doran Obituary

Wilbur Ray Doran, 98, died at home in Dyer January 11, 2022, from pancreatic cancer.

The son of Walker and Ona Garner Doran of Cool Springs, Wilbur is preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Bernice Doran Graves; his grandson, Jerry Yarbrough; and his wife of 75 years, Dorothy Ruth Wright Doran. Survivors include his three daughters, Regina Graham, Dana McLendon (Richard), and Anita Doran (Andrew Straw), as well as his granddaughters, Jenny and Molly McLendon.

A farmer by profession and inventor by curiosity with a knack for problem solving, Wilbur actively farmed land in Gibson County for more than 60 years. In that time, he also enjoyed mechanical work in his shop, where he developed a variety of unique implements. His granddaughters’ favorite invention is his tangle-proof tire swing swivel joint, the outgrowth of many hours of swing set play time together.

He had a delightful sense of humor and could be one to play a practical joke. However, most could not hold such pranks against him, as they inevitably unfolded to include his infectious chuckle. He and Dorothy stayed younger than their years for a long time as a result of the laughter and joy they shared together, with their family, and with their friends in the community.

Wilbur is remembered by many who knew him as a “true gentleman.” He was known for his hearty handshake, his hands matched physically to his huge, giving heart of service. Wilbur served for many years as an elder and Clerk of Session of the Cool Springs Cumberland Presbyterian Church, taking special interest in later years to develop younger leaders who would carry forward a ministry he and his family participated in actively for more than seven decades.

The family would like to give special thanks to his caregivers, as well as Tennessee Quality Care hospice. In lieu of flowers, gifts of remembrance may be directed to Cool Springs Cumberland Presbyterian Church, care of Deana Kendall, 3568 W. Shawtown Rd., Troy, TN 38260.
