Tommie Sue Cummings Obituary

Tommie Sue Cummings, 77, of Dyersburg, Tennessee, died on Thursday, April 23, 2026, at Bells Nursing Home in Bells, Tennessee.

Born Thursday, March 24, 1949, in Dyersburg, Tennessee, she was the daughter of the late Raymond Austin Richardson and the late Evelyn Lorene Foster Richardson.  Tommie Sue was a lifelong resident of Welch Road where her early years were closely tied to her family’s business, the Richardson Peach Orchard—a place filled with hard work, cherished memories, and deep roots.

Tommie Sue was a proud member of the last graduating class of Newbern High School. From a young age, she displayed an extraordinary musical talent. An accomplished pianist, she played her first wedding at just ten years old. Over the years, she faithfully shared her gift with many local churches, including RoEllen Baptist Church, Holy Hills Baptist Church, Fort Hudson Baptist Church, Newbern First Baptist Church, Newbern First Methodist Church, and Newbern Cumberland Presbyterian Church.

She began her career at the Dyer County Health Department before joining Chris Johnson, CPA, where she worked as a dedicated bookkeeper for over thirty years. In addition, she also kept books for Mr. C. Hays Hollar and Mr. Richard Moore, earning a reputation for her reliability and strong work ethic.

Tommie Sue had a love for sports and enjoyed watching many events, with tennis, basketball, and golf being her favorites. One of her most treasured pastimes was visiting Tiptonville, where she would sit in her special place along the Mississippi River, watching the barges pass by—a simple pleasure that brought her great peace.

Above all, she cherished her family. She especially loved being involved in her granddaughter Claire’s life and took great joy in attending the plays in which Claire participated, creating lasting memories together.

Tommie Sue was a faithful member of Newbern Cumberland Presbyterian Church, where she was a source of encouragement and service to others.
