Paul James Slater, Sr., 85, died on Tuesday, December 16, 2025, at Baptist Memorial Hospital-Union City in Union City, Tennessee.
Born Sunday, August 4, 1940, in Boston, Massachusetts, to the late James Frances Slater and the late Margaret Paddock Slater.
Mr. Slater was a retired grocery manager for the Kroger Company, where he devoted thirty-one years of faithful service before retiring. A dedicated employee, he formed many lasting friendships with both coworkers and customers. He was proud and honored to have served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War.
Mr. Slater was a devoted member of Evansville Baptist Church, where he faithfully served as a deacon. For many years, he also delivered newspapers for the State Gazette, a role in which the community depended on him daily. Known for his reliability and strong work ethic, he was always dependable and took great pride in serving others.
Family was deeply important to him, and he cherished the time they shared together and the memories they made.
Funeral services for Mr. Slater will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, December 20, 2025, in the Chapel of Johnson-Williams Funeral Home. Officiating this service will be Bro. Danny Griffin. Interment will follow in Fairview Cemetery in Dyersburg, Tennessee. Visitation for Mr. Slater will be held from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM on Friday, December 19, 2025, at Johnson-Williams Funeral Home.
He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife of thirty-eight years, Glenda McCutcheon Slater of Dyersburg, Tennessee; two sons, Paul Slater, Jr. (Terri) of Newbern, Tennessee and Sean Keaton Slater of Dyersburg, Tennessee; three daughters, Peggy Bentley of Dyersburg, Tennessee, Debbie Green (Tony) Dyersburg, Tennessee and Jennifer Madrey of Union City, Tennessee; son-in-law, Wade Richards of Newbern, Tennessee and he was "Granddaddy Paul" to his nine grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one daughter, Barbara Richards, and one sister, Mary L. Slater.
Honoring Mr. Slater as pallbearers will be Tim Smith, Wade Richards, Brandon Chandler, Justin Chandler, Jeremy McCann and Tony Green. Honorary pallbearer will be Ronnie Wales.
