Marvin Joseph Sampson, 74, of Newbern, Tennessee, died on Thursday, January 16, 2025, at Jackson-Madison County General Hospital in Jackson, Tennessee. He was a beloved resident of Dyersburg Manor-AHC of Dyersburg for the last three years. Mr. Sampson was known for his unwavering faith as a devoted member of the Apostolic faith.
Born Monday, August 21, 1950, in Arrey, New Mexico, he was the son of the late Wilbur Sampson and the late Myrtle Griffith Sampson. Marvin was a minister who dedicated his life to spreading love, kindness and the word of God. His passion for connecting with others extended beyond his ministry; he found joy in playing card games, Moon and chess, where his sharp mind and warm demeanor brought smiles to all who knew him.
A skilled and hard-working individual, he built a successful career as a self-employed drywall installer. He took pride in his work, ensuring every project was a reflection for his dedication and craftmanship.
Above all, Poppy cherished his family deeply, his generosity and kindness made him a pillar of strength for those closest to him. He was a loyal friend to many, touching countless lives with his compassion, humor and unwavering support.
Funeral services for Mr. Sampson will be held at 1:00 PM on Monday, January 20, 2025, in the Chapel of Johnson-Williams Funeral Home. Officiating this service will be Rev. Julian Huey. Interment will follow in Dyer County Memorial Gardens in Dyersburg, Tennessee. Visitation will be held on Monday from 11:00 AM until 1:00 PM at Johnson-Williams Funeral Home.
He is survived by his wife of fifty-four years, Linda Kay Chandler Sampson, who he married on August 14, 1970, in Racine, Missouri; three sons, Bobby Sampson of Newbern, Tennessee, Joel Sampson (Gina) of Newbern, Tennessee and Brent Sampson of Dyersburg, Tennessee; three sisters, Esther Netterville of Mississippi, Ruth Divine of Seneca, Missouri and JoAnn Baker of Seneca, Missouri; two brothers, Hatch Sampson of Racine, Missouri and Obed Sampson (Terry) of Racine, Missouri and he was "Poppy" to his four grandchildren, Kara Jackson (Alec), Brayton Sampson (Dakota), River Sampson and Trestan Sampson and five great-grandchildren, Elijah Jackson, Thomas Jay Jackson, Vada Jackson, Ayden Gardner and Brilynn Sampson.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one grandson, Cam Sampson and four brothers, Daniel Sampson, John Sampson, Luke Sampson, Cletus Sampson and Paul Sampson.
Honoring Mr. Sampson as pallbearers will be Brayton Sampson, River Sampson, Trestan Sampson, Alec Jackson, Justin Huey, Shawn Couch, Brian McCormack and Bradley McCormack. Honorary pallbearers will be Hatch Sampson and Obed Sampson.
