Kenneth Douglas "K. T" Tirey

Kenneth Douglas "KT" Tirey, age 68, of Newbern, Tennessee, passed away peacefully at his home on June 19, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family. 

Born on August 1, 1957, Kenneth lived a life defined by service, dedication, faith, and love for those closest to him. He began his career with the City of Dyersburg Fire Department on May 10, 1976, answering a calling to serve and protect his community. Over more than 35 years, he earned the respect and admiration of his fellow firefighters through his leadership, integrity, and commitment to helping others. Kenneth retired as Battalion Chief on May 13, 2011, leaving behind a legacy of service that touched countless lives. 

Kenneth was a devoted husband, stepfather, brother, uncle, and friend whose greatest joy was spending time with those he loved. He is survived by his loving wife, Angie Tirey of Newbern, Tennessee; his stepson, Chris Nelson and wife, Jennifer, of McKenzie, Tennessee; his sister, Dian Dawson and husband, Bill, of Dyersburg, Tennessee; his brother, Melvin Tirey of Dyersburg, Tennessee; his niece, Amanda Griffin and husband, Bill, his great-nephew, Henry Griffin all of Nashville, Tennessee; and his cherished canine companion, Kacey, who held a special place in his heart. 

He was preceded in death by his parents, Casey Tirey and Betty Tirey; and his beloved dogs, Kelsie and KoKo. 

Outside of his career, Kenneth embraced life with enthusiasm and appreciation for the things that brought him happiness. He loved grilling and cooking for family and friends, collecting Tennessee Volunteers memorabilia, and cheering on the Vols as a loyal and passionate fan. Whether watching a game, sharing a meal, or spending time with loved ones, Kenneth found joy in creating memories with those around him.

One of his favorite traditions was the annual beach trip he shared with Angie, Chris, and Jennifer. Beginning in 2009, these May vacations became treasured opportunities to relax, laugh, and strengthen family bonds. The memories created on those trips will be cherished forever. 

Kenneth's love for animals was evident throughout his life. He adored his dogs and especially treasured his current companion, Kacey, whom he affectionately called his "doger." The companionship and unconditional love he shared with his pets brought him immeasurable happiness.

 A man of faith, Kenneth held firm in his belief in the Lord throughout his life. His faith provided him with strength, guidance, and comfort and was reflected in the kindness, compassion, and generosity he extended to others. Kenneth will be remembered for his warm heart, quick wit, unwavering work ethic, and steadfast devotion to his family and friends. His legacy lives on in the countless lives he touched, the lessons he taught, and the love he shared. While he will be deeply missed, his memory will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.

In place of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Dyersburg-Dyer County Humane Society in honor of Kenneth's lifelong love of animals.

Funeral services for Mr. Tirey will be held at 1:00 PM on Tuesday, June 23, 2026, in the Chapel of Johnson-Williams Funeral Home. Officiating this service will be Rev. Billy Gene Brooks. Interment will follow in Dyer County Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be held on Tuesday from 11:00 AM until 1:00 PM at Johnson-Williams Funeral Home.

Honoring Mr. Tirey as pallbearers will be David Williams, Paul Braithwaite, Richie Fowlkes, Alan Dunevant, Jay Cryer, Eugene McLean and Kevin Woods. Honorary pallbearers will be Bennie Patterson, Mike Sipes, Steve Marberry, Amp Burns, Roger Ledford and present and retired members of the Dyersburg Fire Department.
