Jarrell L Thornton, Sr., 83, of Newbern, Tennessee, died on Wednesday, November 22, 2023, at his residence in Newbern, Tennessee.
Born Wednesday, October 30, 1940 in Humboldt, Tennessee, he was the son of the late Vance Carlyle Thornton and the late Willie Jo Lain Thornton. Dr. Thornton was a longtime pharmacist who operated Newbern Discount Drug Store for over thirty years. He was an avid golfer and a devoted member of the Newbern Methodist Church. He was an accomplished vocalist and member of the Newbern Methodist Church Choir. Each year on Christmas Eve he would share his rendition of "The Perfect Tree" which would bring the true emotion of the season to all who were blessed to hear. He was a proud supporter of Dyer County High School Athletics.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 12:00 PM on Saturday, December 2, 2023, at the Newbern Methodist Church. Officiating this service will be Rev. Tyler Neely. Interment will follow in Fairview Cemetery in Newbern, Tennessee. Visitation will be held on Saturday from 11:00 AM until 12:00 PM at Newbern Methodist Church.
He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife of sixty-three years, Billye Sumars Thornton of Newbern, Tennessee; two sons, Jarrell L. "Jay" Thornton, Jr. of Newbern, Tennessee and Erick Andrew Thornton of Collierville, Tennessee and he was "Poppy" to his six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one daughter, Shana Thornton Brainerd.
The family asks that memorial contributions be directed to the Newbern First Methodist Church, P. O. Box # 72, Newbern, Tennessee 38059.
