Harold Lynn Dunivant, age 79, of Newbern, Tennessee, died Wednesday, April 8, 2026, at his residence.
Born on September 17, 1946, in Dyer County, Tennessee, he was the son of the late Emerson Dunivant and the late Clara Hall Dunivant.
Harold proudly served his country in the United States Army, a testament to his deep sense of duty and commitment to others—qualities that would continue to define his life.
His career in law enforcement was not just a profession, but his life’s calling. He served faithfully for many years as a police officer, rising through the ranks to Sergeant before ultimately serving as Chief of Police for the City of Newbern, Tennessee. He held that position with great pride for twenty-two years, from 1991 until 2013, leading with integrity, dedication, and respect. Even after his retirement, Harold’s commitment to serving others continued as he joined the City of Kenton Police Force, where he remained a respected figure.
Outside of his career, Harold found his greatest joy in the simple pleasures of life. He loved spending time fishing with family and friends, creating memories that will be cherished forever. Those quiet moments by the water were among his happiest.
Above all, Harold loved his family. His grandchildren were the light of his life, and he treasured every moment spent with them. Being called “PaPa” was a title he wore with immense pride and joy.
Graveside services will be held at 11:00 AM. on Monday, April 13, 2026, at Cool Springs Cemetery in the Cool Springs community, with Sheriff Jeff Box officiating. The family will receive friends from 3:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 12, 2026, at Johnson-Williams Funeral Home, 239 East Main Street, Newbern, Tennessee.
He is survived by his son, Billy Matt Powers (Jill) of Newbern, Tennessee; two nephews, Jeff Leggett (Lori) of Newbern, Tennessee and Mike Leggett (Amy) of Dyersburg, Tennessee and he was "PaPa" to his grandchildren, Grant Powers and Ross Powers.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, of twenty plus years, Susan Dunivant; two brothers, Bobby Dunivant and Thomas Dunivant and one sister, Shirley Bulger.
Honoring Mr. Dunivant as pallbearers will be Grant Powers, Ross Powers, Jeff Leggett, Greg Barr, Eric Wells, Rodney Wright and Jim Joyner. Honorary pallbearers will be Terry Lee Mooney and Larry Farley.
