Gerald (Jerry) W. Williams peacefully entered his heavenly home October 15, 2020, at Tennessee Veterans Home in Humboldt, Tennessee.
Jerry was born May 16, 1935, in Stanton, Tennessee to Annie Cole Williams and Milton Williams, who preceded him in death.
Following his graduation from Tennessee Tech University, Jerry served in the US Army 1958-1960 in France. He received his Masters Degree from Middle Tennessee University. Jerry taught Mathematics and coached boys' basketball 1960-1966 at Newbern High School. Beginning in 1966, he taught Chemistry and Mathematics and coached girls' basketball in Nashville at Tennessee Preparatory School, a school for neglected and dependent children.
He thoroughly enjoyed teaching children and playing with younger children. He refereed high school boys' basketball and umpired high school baseball in the Nashville Metro area. In later years, he umpired church league softball and thoroughly enjoyed coaching younger children for Upward Bound Basketball.
Jerry enjoyed playing tennis, handball, softball, bowling and basketball into his mid seventies. He was a lifelong blood donor, member of the Lion's Club and worked with the Baptist Men's Disaster Relief Team in Hurricane Katrina.
A large part of his life was his devotion to his God and his church where he served as Deacon, Sunday School teacher and other church committees as needed in Woodbine Baptist Church and Crievewood Baptist Church in Nashville and was currently a Deacon and member of Harmony Baptist Church.
Due to the current pandemic conditions and the family's concern for the health and well being of others a private family visitation will be held for Mr. Williams. Please join the family for the funeral service to be held at 2:00 PM on Sunday, October 18, 2020 in the Chapel of Johnson-Williams Funeral Home. Officiating this service will be Rev. James Combs and Mr. David Eason. Interment will be at Fairview Cemetery in Dyersburg, Tennessee. You are asked to wear a mask and practice social distancing.
Jerry is survived by his wife of almost fifty-seven years, Rebecca Norsworthy Williams, his sister, Sharon Melas, of Knoxville and nephew, Nigel Melas, of New York. His in-laws include, Patricia Parnell, Jo (Jim) Keeton, Mary (Don) Godwin, David (Jane) Norsworthy, Charles (Carol) Norsworthy and nieces and nephews.
