Connie Sue VanVickle, 76, of Dyersburg, Tennessee, died on Saturday, August 9, 2025, at Okeena Health and Rehabilitation of Dyersburg in Dyersburg, Tennessee.
Born Monday, August 16, 1948, in Dyersburg, Tennessee, she was the daughter of the late Conway L. Young and the late Emma Gladys Gordon Young.
Connie leaves behind cherished memories in the hearts of all who knew her. She truly loved her family, especially her daughter, who preceded her in death. The bond they shared and the special times together remained among her life’s greatest treasures.
Connie dedicated her career to education, retiring from the Dyer County Board of Education after many years of teaching English at Dyer County High School. While at DCHS, she formed lasting friendships with her fellow teachers and earned the respect and admiration of countless students whose lives she touched with her knowledge, guidance, and care.
A woman of many passions, Connie loved flowers and took great joy in “digging in the dirt,” cultivating beauty in her gardens. She had a deep appreciation for travel, exploring destinations around the world and immersing herself in the history of each place she visited. Upon returning home, she would create detailed scrapbooks filled with photographs, mementos, and stories from her journeys—keepsakes that captured her spirit of adventure.
A Celebration of Life Service for Ms. VanVickle will be held at 1:00 PM on Wednesday, August 13, 2025, in the Chapel of Johnson-Williams Funeral Home Home. Officiating this service will be Rev. Kent Cherry. Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 11:00 AM until 1:00 PM at Johnson-Williams Funeral Home.
She leaves to cherish her memory, one sister, Shirley Maldonado (Jerry) of Newbern, Tennessee; her companion, Jim Pickard of Dyersburg, Tennessee and a host of nieces and nephews that she loved dearly.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William Eddie "Pickle" VanVickle; one daughter, Shelley Rene VanVickle; one brother, Rev. Robert Larry Young and two sisters, Barbara Ann Waller and Gladys Elaine Bridges.
