Larry Odell Carter was born October 26, 1928 to Clarence Odell Carter and Rosa Mai Willis Carter in the Glendale community of Dyer County. He departed this earthly life for his eternal life on February 15, 2019.
Growing up on a farm, Larry learned the meaning of hard work at an early age. He was formally educated at the Glendale School and Newbern High School. At age sixteen Larry said he had learned all he needed and began farming full time on the family farm.
A few years later his sister, Lola Carter, brought a co-worker home with her one day and Larry fell in love with a beautiful girl from Crockett County, Juanita Starnes.
In 1950 Larry and Juanita were married, shortly before he left to serve his country in Korea. Upon his discharge from the United States Army, he returned to his love of farming and carpentry which he enjoyed until he retired. Larry served as a deacon at Glendale Church of Christ where he was a member for many years.
In his ninety years, he was blessed with sixty-four years of marriage. Larry is survived by two daughters, Vickie Watford (Dana), Teresa Finley (Johnnie), five grandchildren, Ashley Horner (Jason), Jonathan Watford (Stacy), Joshua Watford (Katie), Rebekah Buchanan (Ryan) and Katelyn Finley (Jonathan Brooks). ten great grandchildren J.T. Watford, Cole Horner, Mason Horner, Sean Buchanan, Tate Watford, Brynlee Watford, Austin Watford, Reed Watford, Conner Buchanan and Nora Buchanan. one brother Gene Carter (Linda), two sisters Arlene Lockhart (Jay) and Sheila Viar (Mike).
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife and brother, Virgal Carter and one sister, Lola Hilliard.
Funeral services for Mr. Carter will be 10:00 AM Monday, February 18, 2019 at Glendale Church of Christ in Newbern, Tennessee with Bro. Dana Watford and Bro. Jay Lockhart officiating. Internment will follow Zion Cemetery in Elbridge, Tennessee. Visitation will be Sunday, February 17, 2019 from 5:00 until 8:00 at Glendale Church of Christ in Newbern, Tennessee.
Pallbearers will be Jason Horner, Cole Horner, Mason Horner, Jonathan Watford, Joshua Watford and Lanny Taylor. Honorary pallbearers will be Joe Richardson, Larry Walker, Harold Willis and Mike Viar.
The family asks that memorials be directed to Glendale Church of Christ, 6739 Lanesferry Road, Newbern, Tennessee 38059 or to the charity of the donor's choice.
