Henry Eugene "Gene" Parnell, 90 of Newbern, Tennessee died on Monday, April 30, 2018, at his residence in Newbern, Tennessee.
Born Thursday, July 7, 1927 in Dyer County, Tennessee, he was the son of the late Finis DeWitt Parnell and the late Robbie Hattie Magee Parnell. He was a retired employee of A T & T, member and lifetime elder of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Dyersburg, Tennessee, served in the Tennessee Army National Guard and enjoyed woodworking and gardening.
Funeral services for Mr. Parnell will be 11:00 AM on Friday, May 4, 2018 at the Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Dyersburg, Tennessee. Officiating this service will be Rev. Dr. Cory D. Williams and Rev. Annetta Camp. Interment will follow in Fairview Cemetery in Newbern, Tennessee. Visitation will be Thursday from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM at Johnson-Williams Funeral Home and on Friday from 10:00 AM until 11:00 AM at the Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Dyersburg, Tennessee.
He leaves to cherish his memory his wife of sixty seven years, Peggy Marie Smith Parnell of Newbern, Tennessee; two daughters, Cynthia Jean Parnell Cherry (Carlton) of Trenton, Tennessee and Sara Ruth Parnell Nick (Lyle) of Fairfield, California; five grandchildren, Cortnee Evans Wilkes (Jonathan), DeLaine Nick, Calyn Evans McMinn (Matt), Chasen Nick and Alyssa Nick and three great-grandchildren, Asher Wilkes, Adalynne Wilkes and Charlee Jean McMinn.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by two brothers, John Obie Parnell and Milton Howard Parnell and one sister, Margie Parnell Vaughn.
Pallbearers will be Jason Glendowne, Drew Smith, Jon Smith, Eric Williams, Troy Vaughn and John Daniel Parnell. Honorary pallbearers will be Malcolm Harris, David Oliver and Elders of the Dyersburg Cumberland Presbyterian Church.
The family ask that memorials be directed to the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, 2280 Parr Avenue, Dyersburg, Tennessee 38024.
