Harold G. "Slim" Allen Obituary

Mr. Harold G. "Slim" Allen went home to be with His Lord & Savior September 19, 2018 at his residence. Slim was well known throughout the community as a dedicated family man and a very hard worker. Slim enjoyed being a jokester, riding horses, entertaining children of all ages and the great adventures with Pedro, The World Most Personal Mule. Pedro brought people from all around as Slim taught him to drink Mountain Dew from a bottle, turn on the water fountain and drink the water, eat bubble gum, and to sit in his own chair. Slim and Pedro were invited to appear on the David Letterman show. Slim ran the full-service gas station in RoEllen for many years. He would give his last penny to someone in need without fail. Many in the community knew if they had a wart, go see Slim because the wart disappeared soon after their visit with him. Slim worked his entire life and could share stories that were real and memorable!

Slim was born July 12, 1927 as the fourth child of Pairesettie & Frank Allen in Benton County, Tennessee. From early childhood he learned to work to maintain the family’s farm life. The Allen family later moved to Dyer County. Slim met the love of his life, Dorothy Houston and married her in 1952. To find work they relocated to Chicago then returned to Dyer County settling in the RoEllen community. Slim was a member of RoEllen Baptist Church.

To cherish his loving memory he leaves his wife, Dorothy along with their two daughters, Diane (Larry) Smith and Wanda (Joe) Rogers of Dyersburg. His grandchildren and great-grandchildren include Jacob (Danielle) Rogers and their children Zoey and Aria; Wesley (Kelia) Smith and their children Avery and Kinsley; Amy Jo Rogers Gathings and her children Lane Earp, Athalie "Miss Attie" Atchison, and Payton Gathings. Slim was preceded in death by his granddaughter, Penny Renee Smith. Also, remaining to cherish Slim’s memory are his siblings, Lozell Allen of Crestwood, IL; Gurlie Joslin of Viar Community, Horace Allen and Carnell Allen of Dyersburg, Dorothy Powers of Tuscumbia, AL; and Betty (Carl) Carr of the Viar Community. Siblings Grady Allen, Bertha Mildred Barr, and James Limon Allen preceded Slim in death. A host of nieces, nephews, and cousins also remain to cherish his memory.
